Here is a summary of responsibilities: Develops, coordinates, and manages STAR House program activities to include strategic planning; coordination of data collection and analysis; supervision of staff and volunteers; financial and budget management; and community development.

Are you qualified?

Bachelors Degree, plus 5-7 years of management experience. Experience should include strategic planning and capacity building, public relations, supervisory and personnel management, and financial management. Experience with non-profit organizations, development planning and fundraising, and working with a Board of Directors is preferred.

Knowledge of:

• Strategic planning development and implementation process

• After-school programs

• Board governance and policy development

• Design and implementation of public relations, community outreach, media relations and fundraising programs

• Human resource management, including hiring and performance reviews

• Principles and practices of effective public speaking

• Financial reporting, budget preparation, and financial oversight

•Ability to plan, organize, manage and integrate the activities of the organization.

• Analyze and make sound recommendations on the long-term goals of the organization

• Facilitate the development and implementation of the strategic plan

• Represent STAR House effectively in public settings and development activities

• Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

• Prepare clear, concise and comprehensive correspondence, reports, studies and other written materials.

• Exercise sound, expert independent judgment and political acumen within general policy guidelines.

• Exercise tact, diplomacy and discretion in dealing with highly sensitive, complex, confidential and controversial issues and situations.

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, board members, business and community leaders, employees, the public and others encountered in the course of work.

The clients and staff of Odyssey Personal Financial Advisors are committed to making a difference by helping the people with the greatest needs within our own community. “With the incredible generosity of clients we just completed our 7^th Annual Odyssey Holiday Outreach”, said Steve Siders, Partner. “We support a different charity each year and we were pleased to help STAR House and their incredible after school programs this year.”

Odyssey Personal Financial Advisors collected many generous donations including several weeks’ worth of supplies – cups, pencils, bowls, notebooks, and crackers, as well as checks and gift cards totaling approximately $1500. In combination with a matching donation of $1000 from the firm Odyssey itself, the total giving from their campaign was $2500!

Each of the members of the Odyssey team has children of their own and they can’t think of a better way to help their local community than by giving other children a chance for an impactful and positive future. “The spirit of the season is all about being thankful for our many blessings and helping others when we can”, said Steve. The team visited the STAR House after school program at Mimosa Elementary School recently to experience the activities first hand.

We appreciate our volunteers who allow us to reach each of our students, help them with their homework and challenge their academic potential. Our volunteers give their time to read or listen to students read, help students review for tests, check homework accuracy, and tutor in their favorite subject.

Helen, a long time STAR House volunteer, enjoys reading aloud to our students and helps them be creative through craft projects (something often omitted in busy schools).  “I like the way the program has developed over time”, Helen remarks.  Recently, she saw a former student who now has a daughter of his own.  He told her that his daughter is in the second grade and he is teaching her all the things he had learned from her.   Things like, “when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.”  You never know what might stick over the years!  Her advice to anyone interested in volunteering at STAR House is to “come spend some time in our program, it makes such a difference.”

Our students love coming to STAR House and they look forward to the additional one-on-one help.  Many of them struggle with reading comprehension – a basic skill for all academic areas.   Merrill, the site director at Esther Jackson, is a veteran teacher.  She has a passion for working with at-risk students.  “Watching their faces when they begin to understand a concept or begin reading on their own is quite thrilling.”

As our programs expand, our need for volunteers is expanding.   Deborah, a regular volunteer at Esther Jackson, realized what an integral part of the program she had become when she recently had to miss a regular session.   Her students missed her and were concerned about her absence.  Deborah remarked, “This was an affirmation that they were counting on me to help them with their homework.  Their smiles and eagerness to keep working at the end of a very long day is very rewarding to me”.

Volunteers at Esther Jackson are needed Monday-Friday 3-5PM and truly have the ability to make a difference in the lives of the children we serve.  Whether you have one day a week or one day a month, we welcome your time and have a task that will suit your personal abilities.  Our wonderful team of coaches are available to help identify student’s needs and guide you through the process.

Starry Night took place at the beautiful home of Robert (Bob) Hagan and included an evening of fabulous food and dancing under the stars. The sold out crowd of over 200 guests attended the “causal chic” evening including Congressman Tom Price, State Senator John Albers and several other elected officials. “Starry Night has become the event of the fall season” remarked event co-chair Julie Mizer. “We could not be more pleased with our corporate and food sponsors and with this beautiful weather!” Other sponsors of Starry Night include Bank of North Georgia, Buff and Jim Van Epps, Georgia Power, North Fulton Hospital, Macy’s, Frazier & Deeter, Bob Hagan, PaperHost, Roswell Rewards, Keller and Sam Torrey, Stroud’s Printing & Design, Roger and Trey Wise, and World Harvest Church.

Starry Night’s signature drink, the Ginger Star, was a huge hit of the evening. Creating the drink was beverage sponsor, Vixen Vodka. Local restaurants sponsored heavy hors d’oeuvre stations including Dinner Tonight, Doubletree Hotel, I Canita Cake, Inc Street Food, Ippolitos, Outback Steakhouse, Salt Factory Pub, Shane’s Rib Shack, Table & Main, The Nutt Hutt, Willy’s and Zaxby’s and many guests found their favorite appetizer or dish among the delicious choices. Additional beverage sponsors were Concentrics Restaurant Group and Jana Water.

“We are just thrilled with the evening,” said co-chair Eleida Fleming. “Our committee worked tirelessly and the community support for the families that we serve was nothing short of amazing. The stars truly aligned for STAR House.”

The auction will include donations from our favorite area restaurants, wonderful getaways and gifts you can give this holiday season. We will nosh on heavy appetizers from various restaurants in the area and Vixen Vodka is preparing the signature drink, the Ginger Star!

The dress for this event is what we have referred to as ‘snappy casual.’  No need for ball gowns & black tie; fun party attire is most appropriate. The dance floor is sure to be packed, so bring your dancin’ shoes!

STAR House has been operating after school educational programs in the Roswell, Georgia community since 1993. We provide a healthy snack, homework help, mentoring, and enrichment activities in a caring and safe environment. We currently serve approximately 240 students in elementary, middle and high school. Our students are at-­risk due to a number of factors including: below average performance in core academic subjects, low income family and lack of adult supervision in the after school hours. We do not charge for our services and the proceeds from this event will ensure additional children are able to attend our programs.

Today, fifteen golfers took the links in the 2nd Annual STAR House Golf Marathon. These “golf warriors” played more than 36 holes of golf each and collected pledges and donations per hole. Brookfield Country Club donated the use of the course and hosted the event. Community leaders Jim Coyle, CEO of PaperHost and Steve Stroud, owner Stroud’s Printing and Design were again this year’s Golf Marathon event chairs.

Each golfer’s goal of $2200 will go towards scholarships for students to attend STAR House’s program. Thus far, over $20,000 has been raised. Other participants in this year’s event include Britt Faunce of Fifth Third Bank, winner of the Banker’s Cup – the top fund raiser of all participating bankers. ABOUT STAR HOUSE: Since 1993, STAR House has been providing after-school educational programming and summer camps for at-risk children, between the ages of five and eighteen years old in Roswell, Georgia. Nearly 200 low-income students in area schools benefit from the organization’s innovative approach of emphasizing academic skills improvement in a nurturing, yet accountable partnership of parents, teachers, student and community.
